Cebu City

From Coron Town we took a short flight to Cebu City in the Visayas (the island chain that makes up the lower Philippines). Cebu is the second largest city in the country, and is similar to Manila in that it is smog-choked and extremely loud. We were met at the airport by our friend Janis, who we'd met earlier while camping with the couchsurfers in Zambales. In typical Filipino fashion, Janis and her family and friends were incredibly hospitable and welcoming, and went to great lengths to show us all of Cebu in its smoggy, techo-thumping glory. Janis and her friends work the night shift at an outsourced call center for various US banks, so, vampire-like, they stay out until sunrise and sleep all day. We struggled to keep up. For two nights we escaped the city and stayed on the tiny island of Malapascua, a diving and snorkling haven three hours from Cebu proper.
