Diving in Sipidan

From Cebu City we took a short flight up to Manila, and then down to Borneo and the small diving mecca of Sipadan. We had heard amazing things about Sipadan from several travelers, and found it it to surpass our highest expectations. The island itself is uninhabited (after a recent kidnapping of several German tourists by some Indonesian pirates, the government only allows 120 divers a day), so the main access point is the dull and dirty town of Semporna, an hour boatride from the divesite. The diving was spectacular. Sipadan is the only volcanic island in the area- its located in water 600 meters deep, its edges dropping off in sheer coral walls that stretch down into the dark. Currents moved us slowly along the edge of the island, passing enormous, twisting schools of barracuda and giant sea turtles too numerous to count. Gray tipped reef sharks cruised lazily several meters below us. Gaelen and I blew bubble rings while butt-nosed parrotfish munched noisily on the coral.
